Oil on canvas, 73.7 x 101.6 cm Drug Store is a testimony to Hopper's liking or pleasure of everyday things. It also highlights the ironic touches that occasionally peppered his work. Here, in this painting of the venerable corner drug store, Silber's Phamarcy, the crass advertisement for "Ex-Lax" (a laxative to ease one of Civilization's endemic ailments) contrasts not only with the store name in terms of its lettering style but also with the old-fashioned dignity of the window display of jars, drapes and gift sets. The painting also provides a record of Hopper's characteristic ambivalence. On ghe one hand, his love of detail seems a throwback to verism and an anticipation of the photo-realism of painters such as Richard Estes. On the other hand, even here Hopper is defamiliarizing his subjects. The drug store, brightly lit up from within, is in a dark street and lights up only a portion of it. The window points up the emptiness of this system of signs: thrre is no one to read the message. Source: Edward Hopper - Taschen: Basic Art Album Series Book ADVERT: ALSO AVAILABLE:
