A girl and boy discover young love, family disagreements and pregnancy. Summer with Monika belongs to Bergman's middle period when he was primarily concerned with the trials and tribulations of adolescence and the problems of young love.

A chance meeting in a coffee shop between Harry (Ekborg), a young errand boy, and Monika (Andersson), a wild and reckless girl who works in a nearby grocery shop, soon develops into a love affair. After a row with her father, Monika goes on a motorboat holiday. Their idyllic summer is soon shattered by the news that Monika is pregnant. Faced with sudden responsibility, Harry agrees to marry Monika and they set up home together in a small flat. Monika rapidly becomes bored with married life and looking after the baby. Soon Harry returns from a business trip to discover that his wife has been unfaithful with a former lover.

A frank and tender portrait of first love, Bergman's film is also a realistic and uncompromising account of a disintegrating marriage.

The last of Bergman's studies of young love and the alienating effects of city life, tis is a masterpiece of contrasting images and emotions. The brilliant, sunlit scenes set on the isolated islands perfectly capture the joy and innocence of summer love, as sassy teenager Harriet Andersson and adoring Lars Ekborg splash n the dappled water and kiss beneath the stars. But Gunnar Fischer's stifling shots of Stockholm are perhaps more impressive, as he sets the visual tone for the gradual drift into desertion and disillusionment.
