Jean Cocteau was heavily influenced by 17th century Dutch paintings and silent cinema while designing the visual atmosphere of the film. He wanted many scenes to feel closer to a living dream or moving artwork than conventional narrative cinema. Some of the castle interiors were filmed at Château de Raray in northern France, whose striking arches and sculpted figures later became strongly associated with the film’s mysterious atmosphere. During production, Cocteau suffered from serious illness and physical exhaustion, yet continued directing while often working under difficult conditions. Despite this, the finished film appears remarkably controlled and elegant. The famous scene where Belle glides down the corridor was achieved using hidden moving platforms beneath Josette Day’s costume, helping create the floating, unreal movement that gives the film its hypnotic quality. Although now considered a masterpiece, the film was initially viewed by some critics as strange and overly theatrical before later generations recognised its enormous influence on fantasy and art cinema. This reproduction movie poster celebrates one of the most imaginative and visually influential films ever produced in France, making it especially appealing to collectors of surreal cinema and classic European movie art.
