Joan Allen is a very serious stage and screen actor. So serious that not only has she known the seriously substantive John Malkovich since her Eastern Illinois University days but joined his Steppenwolf Theater group in 1977 and co-starred with him in her Broadway debut Burn This ten years later. She won a Tony award for that.

Another Tony nomination came the following year for her performance in The Heidi Chronicles.

Despite the fact Joan is not a big Hollywood name (by which I mean her name doesn't put bums on cinema seats the same way as a Tom Cruise She has been nominated twice for Academy Awards for best supporting actress for her Pat Nixon in Nixon (1995) and 1996's mind-numbingly earnest The Crucible and a best actress nomination for 2000's The Contender.

Tall (some two inches taller than her Nixon co-star Anthony Hopkins) and thin, 'versatile' could almost be her middle name. Films include: Manhunter (1986); Tucker: A Man and His Dreams (1988); Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993); The Ice Storm (1997); Face/Off (1997); Pleasantville (1998); The Bourne Supremacy (2004); and The Upside of Anger (2005).
