• Was a friend of Monet. He met him in 1870 and bought his paintings
• Left over 900 oil paintings
• Left over 2,000 watercolours
• His most notorious picture is Portrait of Madame X (Mme Gautreau) (1884). When it was originally exhibited in Paris it produced such a negative reaction that it was one of the reasons he moved to London
• Influenced by Velazquez. Saw his work when he visited Spain in 1880
• Lived in the United States for less than one year
• Did some sculpture in his later years
