Issued in 1994, Dressing For Pleasure brought together the atmospheric trumpet work of Jon Hassell with the electronic production approach of Bluescreen, creating a recording that moved between ambient music, experimental jazz, downtempo textures, and early 1990s electronic sound design. Rather than following conventional song structures, the album develops through layered rhythms, spacious production, treated trumpet passages, and mood-based compositions. Hassell’s distinctive playing style — already associated with his influential “Fourth World” approach — gives the record a dreamlike and cinematic atmosphere throughout. The production reflects the period’s growing crossover between ambient music and electronic experimentation, while still retaining the improvisational feel and tonal subtlety that defined much of Hassell’s earlier work. The result is an album that feels equally connected to late-night electronic music, jazz fusion, and immersive ambient recording. Dressing For Pleasure remains one of the more understated releases connected with Jon Hassell’s catalogue during the 1990s, appreciated by listeners interested in ambient electronics, experimental composition, and genre-blending studio production. This US cassette edition reflects the original release period, when independent and experimental electronic releases continued to appear on cassette alongside compact disc formats during the early-to-mid 1990s. For collectors, cassette editions of Dressing For Pleasure preserve a lesser-known but distinctive collaboration from a transitional era in ambient and experimental electronic music.
