Gigantic sets were built for Doctor Zhivago (1965). The director David Lean and production designer John Box took their 800-man crew through a hectic eighteen months of reconstructing Moscow outside Madrid (filming it in Hollywood was crippling expensive).

The giant exterior set comprised a half-mile long, paved street, complete with operational tram lines and dominated by an accurate replica of the Kremlin. There was also a functional viaduct, with railway engines, a church, and more than fifty business premises.

Other gigantic sets were built in the mountains near Sona, north of Madrid, an area topographically similar to the Steppes of Russia. Here it was necessary to alter the course of a river, no less, to fit requirements and miles of fresh railway tracks were laid. Further construction work took place in Finland and among Canada's Rocky Mountains.

In all, Lean and Box employed 120 plasteres, 210 carpenters, sixty masons, twenty-five tubular steel specialists, thirty painters, twenty electricians and more than 300 back-up technicians - just to prepare the way for shooting.
