Much of the filming for the movie The Go-Between (1970) took place at Melton Constable Hall, a huge, elegant, derelict house twenty miles from Norwich which originally belonged to the Astley family who, in the eighteenth century, had been granted the barony of Hastings.
Subsequently the Duke of Westminster acquired the property and movie star Madeleine Carroll lived there in the twenties with her husband Captain Philip Astley, nephew of the twenty-first Lord Hastings.
The film's director, Joseph Losey, borrowed the house from the current owner, a farmer, and completely refurbished it at colossal cost.
