The Susie in question is, of course, his daughter Susie Boyt, now a successful novelist. Her The Small Hours is an excellent read, 'a stunning meditation on love, self-love and forgiveness, and their shadowy opposites'.

Freud, who lived in London since his family left Berlin in 1933 when he was ten, achieved preeminence through his ruthless perception of the human form. This painting is a typical example.

Freud was an important figure in British art for years, recognised so from the 1950s onwards, I guess, but his fame really wen mega-big worldwide from a retrospective at the Hirshhorn in Washington, D.C., in 1987. From then to now I would say his fame surpassed almost ever other artist living no matter where in the globe they were located.
