Only approximately 5,000 copies were pressed in the UK. This is a true collector's item featuring Russell Mills's stunning artwork throughout - one of the most beautiful box sets ever produced.
Weatherbox was released by Virgin Records in 1989 as a boxed collection of David Sylvian’s first four solo-era releases following his time in Japan.
The set brings together Brilliant Trees, Alchemy: An Index of Possibilities, Gone to Earth, and Secrets of the Beehive in a single presentation, reflecting the early development of his solo work between 1984 and 1987.
The packaging was designed as a coordinated visual project, with artwork contributions from Russell Mills and Dave Coppenhall, alongside a booklet and printed materials created specifically for the box set format.
Each album reflects a different stage of Sylvian’s approach during this period. Brilliant Trees introduces a collaborative style built around jazz and experimental musicians, while Alchemy expands into more abstract and instrumental-led compositions.
Gone to Earth combines structured vocal tracks with extended instrumental material, and Secrets of the Beehive moves toward more minimal arrangements with a stronger focus on acoustic and orchestral sound.
Key collaborators across these recordings include Steve Jansen, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Holger Czukay, Robert Fripp, Jon Hassell, and Danny Thompson, each contributing to different parts of Sylvian’s evolving sound.
Weatherbox functions as a consolidated archive of this early solo phase, presenting the original albums together without altering their structure or sequencing.
