Filming started in France in June 1957. Edward Dmytryk directed. It was based on Irwin Shaw's best-selling novel.
The story followed the lives of three young men: Michael, a nightclub entertainer, played by Dean Martin; Noah Ackerman, a shy Jewish GI, played by Montgomery Clife; and a passionate Nazi officer named Christian Diestl, played by Marlon Brando.
Brando dyed his hair platinum and had the make-up artist give him a noble "John Barrymore" nose.
