Masaccio was the first great master in 15th-century Florence. This is a remarkable fact when you consider that he was dead before his 28th birthday.
He entered the Guild in Florence in 1422. His first major work with documentar evidence is the Pisa Polyptych for the Carmelite Church in Pisa in 1426. The NG, London, now has the central panel, Madonna and Child.
In the last two or three years of his life he painted a fresco of the Trinity in S.M. Novella, Florence, and the frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel of the Carmelite Church in Florence (S.M. del Carmine).
