This piece has to be placed in the context of the time it was created in. By his late teens, Picasso was studying at Madrid's San Fernando Academy. He rejected the academic style in art, quit Madrid and returned to Barcelona. Once there he found the rather bohemian and avant-garde tavern, the Els Quatre Gats (The Four Cats). Those who frequented were well versed in all the latest artistic trends in Paris and London. And this was the time of the elegant and undulating art nouveau style.

It was here in February 1901 that Picasso had his first exhibition of portraits and caricatures.

It is obvious that his design for a menu was influenced by art nouveau. Moreover, the the bold, simplified composition echoes the poster artists like Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and the British Beggarstaff Brothers.

Around 1900 Picasso set off for London and, to London's expense (I wonder what kind of artist Picasso would have been had he got to London) but made it only as far as Paris. Though it was only a brief visit, he found an artistic atmosphere ieven greater and more expansive than even Barcelona could offer...A more detailed description & text in the book: Life and Works of Picasso
