These were good years for Picasso. His financial struggles were over, and he was now famous helped in no small part by two big sales of works which the French government had confiscated during the war from Picasso's former dealers, Kahnweiler and Uhde, who had the misfortune to be German-born.

The chameleon that was Picasso was not only producing both Cubist and more traditional work, but also this, a new "Neo-Classical" style, featuring figures like antique statues but huge, huge, huge. This is a rare painting by Picasso in that the 2 figures are in modern clothes though the artist has purposefully made them ill-fitting but it is rare because if you think about it he rarely used modern dress. Now that is a weird thought. Picasso was Mr.Modern, a visionary far ahead of his time yet he used images from the past such as the nude, the harlequin or acrobat etc.
