review:
As long as the stalemate between Prince "Symbol" Nelson and Warner persisted, there was no way to tell who was right: were the vaunted unreleased tracks inferior efforts, better left in the can, or, were they great songs, unwisely repressed? Now that the impasse has been broken--Nelson has left Warner and started his own label, NPG--the answer is clear. Nelson's first post-Warner release, Emancipation, offers three full hours of music on 3 CDs, and none of it seems extraneous. Instead, every disc contains some of the catchiest melodies and most danceable rhythms of Nelson's career. It's as if a dam had cracked and a flood of pent-up creativity had been unleashed--Geoffrey Himes
notes:
Prince's first album after leaving Warner Brothers. Originally released in 1996, this three CD set runs
exactly three hours which easily makes it one of the longest albums of all-new original material ever released by
a popular artist. Long deleted in the States. Standard triple jewelcase. EMI.
reviews:
- Village Voice (2/25/97) - Ranked #16 in the
Village Voice's 1996 Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll
- Spin (2/97, p.85) - 7 (out of 10) - "...Love has
renewed the musical wit and weird imagination that's always made [Prince] a singular creature. A few songs here
might even make the all-time [Prince] mix tape..."
- Musician (3/97, pp.88-90) - "...an operatic
depiction of the conflict (or rather, the confluence) between his spiritual quest and his sensual longings
and a streetwise expression of indignation as he strives to project and protect his vision....an amazing range of musical styles..."
- Entertainment Weekly (12/13/96, p.82) - "...this
three-hour, triple-CD set is somewhat less than the wall-to-wall tour de force our man no
doubt envisioned. Which isn't to say that there's not easily, oh, an hour's worth of top shelf material here..." - Rating: B
- The Source (2/97, p.86) - "...The artist was
always many things to many people...Emancipation's 36 tracks explore all the identities..".

Prince (vocals, guitars, Arp string ensemble, piano, Clavinet, synthesizer, bass, drums, percussion)
Recorded at Record Plant, California
Signed to a hefty record contract while still in his teens, Prince was only 19 when he wrote, produced and
played all the instruments (the album's initial press release listed no less than 23) on his first album
For You, a keyboard-dominated dance record that melds funk, soul and disco.
While
For You didn't sell as was well as was expected, Soft and Wet did make the singles chart and
the lush ballad Baby established that besides writing great dance songs, Prince could sing as well as
any of his R&B contemporaries.
For You is a portentous roadmap for the direction Prince and popular music would take in the 1980s

review:
Prince Rogers Nelson is the most talented musician of his generation, but he has often seemed strangely out of sync with his own time. Performing under the single name of Prince, he mixed European American and African American musics like few others in history. Yet his extravagant obsessions with sex, religion, and dance grooves made him a stranger in the strange land of rock & roll, while his melodic genius and instrumental virtuosity made him the odd man out in an R&B world dominated by programmed rhythm machines. Perhaps that's why Nelson abandoned the stage name of Prince and adopted an unpronounceable symbol as his nom de musique. The Gold Experience is Nelson's first full-length album released under his symbol moniker and it's his strongest work under any name since 1990's Graffiti Bridge. Less a new direction than a return to the hard-edged funk of 1987-88's Sign o' the Times and the Black Album, the Gold Experience is better than either of those albums because this time the stripped-down rhythms have been bolstered by lots of guitar. In other words, the most effective integrationist in pop music has married deep-groove funk to in-your-face rock guitar--without sacrificing his usual gift for melody and harmony. Nelson has long been one of the best guitarists around, but because his licks were usually buried deep in his thickened arrangements, his chops weren't always obvious. In the more open arrangements here, they're pretty hard to miss. With this raw music come some rather raw lyrics, counterbalanced by a genuinely romantic ballad and two gospel-rooted songs lamenting the current state of American society--Geoffrey Himes

It's easy to dismiss this album as an unfocused mess--and many have. On
Graffiti Bridge, Prince writes songs for colleagues to play; nine of the
17 cuts feature other artists such as The Time, Mavis Staples, Tevin Campbell and George Clinton. And
it is indeed messy. But the record's merits must be acknowledged too. At the top of this list
is the song Joy in Repetition, a slight narrative idea clung to, wrapped in dreamy bluesiness, and beautifully
delivered. Also notable is We Can Funk. Many have tried to reclaim George Clinton's P-Funk
contributions to butt-shaking music, but few have managed it without losing their own identity. Prince
pulls it off. Even some of Prince's missteps can be classified as brilliant mistakes, beautiful failures. The overtly
Christian Elephants and Flowers " is as preposterously rich and frothy as its title. Thieves in the Temple's
sonic frou-frou has earned it fans, despite its greasy aftertaste
Graffiti Bridge is a funk experiment from a man who never rests on his laurels
What the Critics Say...
- Q Magazine - 4 Stars (out of 5) - Ranked as the #8 Album of 1990.
- Entertainment Weekly - Ranked as the #6 Album of 1990.
- Rolling Stone (8/23/90) - 4.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...reclaims Prince's rare stature as a pop Picasso, an experimentalist with enough mass appeal to make his experiments matter....the first four songs [alone] cover more musical waterfront than some bands do in an entire career.."
- Entertainment Weekly - "...very likely a masterpiece..." - Rating: A+
- Down Beat (1/91) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "..Prince has mastered a brand of explosive intimacy, sketching out on the themes of lust and spiritual inquest.."

The
hits 1 includes two previously unreleased tracks, extensive liner notes, track annotations, recording
information and photographs by Herb Ritts. Upon their release in 1993, the shorthand
descriptors were that the
Hits 1 contained the "clean" songs while
the
Hits 2 had all the "dirty" stuff. It's not quite so simple. Even Prince's most chaste material, like the
finger-wagging Pop Life, has a certain limpid eroticism. Soft and Wet and the
power-poppy When You Were Mine, while nowhere near as blatant as some of the Purple One's
other tracks, still raise an eyebrow. What's most interesting is the way the best songs from uneven albums like
Graffiti Bridge Seven
assume a new luster in the company of classics like When Doves Cry
The
Hits 1 contains the previously unreleased Pink Cashmere and a live version of
Nothing Compares 2 U. This disc and its companion volume are also available as a
box set with an essential
bonus third disc of b-sides
review:
In addition to the three-disc Hits/The B-Sides set, Prince's 1993 release list included separate editions of the two Hits volumes. By beginning with When Doves Cry, Volume One would seem to promise a fairly mainstream overview of the man's career. But what can such a small word mean to an artist who writes love songs like this disc's Adore ("You can rip up my clothes, smash up my ride ... well, maybe not the ride") and who can put a cryptic religious fable (we think) like 7 in the Top 10? --Rickey Wright
What the Critics Say...

review:
The second volume of Prince's collection of singles (and a couple of outtakes) has sex on the brain, and a few other places. Apparently aimed at, shall we say, the harder-core fan of the Artist, this disc still ends its parade of R-rated sallies (Dirty Mind, Sexy M.F., Head) with a cleansing Purple Rain. And just to blur things even more, among its Top 10 hits are candidly horny moments like Kiss and Little Red Corvette--songs that add new twists to the African-American store of body-talkin' funkin'-blues poetry. --Rickey Wright

The
Hits 2 includes a booklet with photography by Herb Ritts, plus extensive liner notes by
Alan Leeds, and track annotations about previously unreleased material. Upon their
release in 1993, the shorthand descriptors were that the
Hits 1 contained the "clean" songs while the
Hits 2 had all the "dirty" stuff. It's not quite so simple. Such songs as Controversy
delve into politics; Purple Rain and I Would Die 4 U explore Prince's deeply
felt religious iconography. And, with only rare exceptions, Prince's songs tend to be more teasing and
erotic than blatant. Even the most outrageous tunes, like Head, have a sly wit that marks them as much
more than Penthouse Forum titillation material. Bottom line: these 18 tracks are the very pinnacle of
'80s and early '90s pop-funk. The
Hits 2 contains two previously unreleased tracks, the
funky Peach and the calculated-to-shock Pope.
This disc and its companion volume are also available as a
box set with an essential bonus third disc of b-sides
review:
"Pope" heißt die Nummer, die diese Compilation zum Sammlerstück macht -- kaum mehr als eine
Fingerübung für Prince, die dem Repertoire sehr, sehr vieler anderer allerdings zur Ehre gereichen würde. Ganz
The Hits 2
für alle anderen einen beeindruckenden Abriß, zusammen mit
The Hits 1
einen exzellenten Querschnitt durch das popmusikalische Genie des kleinen großen Mannes von 1979-1991 dar. Sucht
meist vergeblich seinesgleichen--Rolf Jäger

The hits / The b-sides contains 56 tracks on 3 CDs spanning Prince's 15-years as a
performer. It also includes a 22-page booklet with photographs by Herb Ritts, plus extensive liner notes and
track annotations about previously unreleased material, live recordings and B-sides. The prospect of
collecting all the hits and B-sides by one of the most talented, prolific, and successful pop stars
of the '80s and '90s onto a mere three discs seems laughable at first. Nevertheless, this
stupendous, well-sequenced set provides a thoroughly representative overview of his Prince-ness's oeuvre and a
genuine sense of the range and impact of his brilliance. The number of great
songs on the 56-item track list boggles the mind. From his early synth-pop (Dirty Mind, Controversy), through the
golden middle-period of the Revolution (1999, Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret, Kiss,
U Got The Look), and on to such New Power Generation hits as Gett Off and Sexy M.F.,
Prince's innovative, accessible, and utterly singular musical vision is undeniable.
The box is
made doubly indispensable by the inclusion of previously unreleased material, live
recordings, and B-sides (which fill the third disc). Unsurprisingly, much of this material finds Prince at
his experimental best. Many of these songs-Pink Cashmere, 200 Balloons, Erotic City, and his version of his own
Nothing Compares 2 U (made enormously popular by Sinead O'Connor)-should have been hit
singles in their own right. This set is an absolute necessity for fans, newcomers, and everyone else
review:
In addition to most of his singles, from I Wanna Be Your Lover to Thieves in the Temple, from When Doves Cry to 7, this triple-CD set throws in some worthwhile new music and a full disc of the fantastic flips that made buying 7- and 12-inches a must even when you already owned the A-side. "You can be the side effect," he mutters herein. "I'd rather be the dope." Witness some of the funkiest pharmaceuticals around
--Rickey Wright
What the Critics Say...
- Rolling Stone (Oct./93, p.114) - 4.5 Stars - Excellent Plus - "...
[THE HITS/B-SIDES] is a dizzying sprawl...his label just might get it's money's worth--even if [Prince] keeps his word
and never makes a studio album..."
- Spin (12/93, p.126) - "...with absolutely no bad songs [on THE HITS], it's hard to
fuss...those who've found their interest in Prince flagging [will] feel as if God's granted them an extra classic
Prince album..."
- Village Voice (3/1/94, p.5) - Ranked #8 in the Village Voice's list of the 10 Best
Reissues Of 1993
- Q Magazine (11/93, p.148) - 5 Stars - Indispensible - "...it's not just the
high and mighty width of [THE HITS] that startles: the sustained quality here is remarkable..."
- Melody Maker (9/18/93, p.41) - "...The Best Of Prince is, by demonstrable logic, The
Greatest Record Ever Made...there just ain't enough..."
- New Musical Express (9/18/93, p.34) - (7) - Very Good - "...HITS go right to
the core of the matter...the sophisticated programming of HITS puts a whole new spin on the Prince thing..."
- Entertainment Weekly (9/17/93, p.86) - "...unlike so many boxed sets, these
anthologies aren't weighed down with significance--they're simply a blast to hear and even revelatory..." - Rating: A

if i was prince: the tribute album various artists
us cd album (2002)
number of discs: 1
label: beggars x1 recording
review:
One of the oddest tribute records ever made, this disc puts 10 of the Symbolic One's oldies into the hands of irreverent young indie-rock types. The album focuses more on early obscurities and album tracks than on Prince's hits, but it says more about the strengths of his ingeniously bizarre songwriting sensibility than a more straightforward tribute might. If I Was Prince kicks off with a bang--Peaches and her sidekick Bitch Lap Lap cartwheeling and chit-chatting through a seriously mutated, R-rated electronic take on Sexy Dancer--but gets pretty uneven through the middle. Simian's funereal circus-music Under the Cherry Moon and Bronze Age Fox's icy crawl through The Most Beautiful Girl in the World can't be accused of excessive faithfulness to the originals, but don't add much either. There's one other killer, though: Misty Dixon's interpretation of the Purple Rain ballad The Beautiful Ones, which works its way up from skeletal chilliness to bitter force--Douglas Wolk

review:
This 45-minute interview disc has zero documentation on who's conducting the
interview and exactly when it was done. There's also a fair amount of ambient
noise; it sounds like someone stuck a microphone on a table at an outdoor cafe and launched in. Prince
admits early in the interview that he isn't particularly comfortable meeting new
people or answering questions about himself, but the dogged interviewer persists and gradually Prince begins to
answer, first in complete sentences then ultimately in whole paragraphs. Prince comes across as the
quiet kid in math class; he explains that Prince is his real name but that "my last name is pretty
sickening, so I don't use it." You can feel him squirm at the questions about what kind of
music he does ("I think society...should concentrate basically on the equals sign--what they get after it's all over"). Most
replies seem pretty thoughtful ("The fact that people lose their cool behind [sex] is enough to
write about it, to me") though he remarks, with no irony whatsoever, "I don't listen to music when I'm not
playing music, I don't like to do things to excess"
