Full name: Caroline Louise Marguerite Grimaldi
Born: 23 January 1957, Monaco
Titles: Princess of Hanover; Hereditary Princess of Monaco (1970–2014)

Background

Princess Caroline is the eldest child of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace. Educated in Monaco, France and the United States, she later graduated from the Sorbonne with a degree in philosophy. From a young age she was expected to take on a more formal role within the principality, particularly as her brother Prince Albert did not marry until later in life.

Public and Cultural Role

Caroline is widely associated with cultural development in Monaco. Since the 1980s she has overseen or supported numerous arts institutions, including the Princess Grace Foundation, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, and various museum and theatre initiatives. Her work has centred less on ceremony and more on ensuring the stability and visibility of Monaco’s cultural infrastructure.

Charitable Work

The Princess has maintained long-term involvement in social organisations across the principality. She has served as president of several local charities dealing with childhood welfare, support for people with disabilities, and international humanitarian issues. Her commitment to these institutions has been one of the most consistent aspects of her public life.

Personal Life

Princess Caroline has three children from her marriage to the late Stefano Casiraghi, who died in a boating accident in 1990. In 1999 she married Prince Ernst August of Hanover, with whom she has one daughter. Although still legally married, the couple have long lived separately and Caroline’s public life remains almost entirely based in Monaco.

Recent Years

Following the accession of Prince Albert II in 2005 and his marriage in 2011, Caroline has gradually stepped back from the more formal duties she once undertook. She continues to represent Monaco at selected cultural events, supports major arts and charitable organisations, and maintains influence within the principality’s civic and cultural spheres.

Today

Princess Caroline remains a central figure in Monaco’s cultural identity. Her current work focuses on long-established artistic and charitable commitments rather than public visibility, reflecting a stable and measured approach to her position within the principality.
