Remedios Varo’s As del Volante belongs to the artist’s extraordinary body of work in which mechanical invention, mystical symbolism and dreamlike narrative are fused into a single, coherent visual language. In Varo’s universe, movement is rarely accidental — it is constructed, engineered, and imbued with spiritual intent, as though reality itself were a carefully designed mechanism for transformation.

The title, which evokes both mastery and motion, suggests control over direction, fate and journey. A “volante” — a wheel or steering device — implies navigation, while the “ace” introduces the idea of exceptional skill or heightened agency. In Varo’s hands, such imagery is never merely literal; it becomes a metaphor for inner navigation, psychic exploration and the disciplined pursuit of knowledge beyond the visible world.

As with much of Varo’s work, the scene operates as both invention and allegory. Figures and devices appear engaged in precise, almost ritualised action, suggesting a hidden system of logic operating beneath the surface of reality. Her compositions often resemble laboratories of the imagination, where the boundaries between science, magic and philosophy dissolve into a unified process of discovery.

Varo’s training in technical drawing and her early exposure to Surrealism are both evident here. The work balances architectural precision with visionary ambiguity, creating a space that feels simultaneously engineered and impossible. Every element appears intentional, yet the overall effect resists fixed interpretation, inviting the viewer into a state of active contemplation rather than passive observation.

Across her career, Varo developed a consistent symbolic vocabulary: enclosed interiors, elongated figures, mechanical apparatus, and subtle references to esoteric systems of thought. These elements recur not as repetition, but as variations within a larger philosophical inquiry into transformation, consciousness and the unseen structures of reality.

As del Volante exemplifies this approach, presenting a world in which control is both technical and spiritual. The act of navigation becomes an allegory for self-mastery — a journey not across geography, but through states of perception and understanding.

Born in Spain and later exiled to Mexico, Varo developed her mature artistic language in dialogue with exile, memory and intellectual migration. Her works from this period stand among the most distinctive contributions to twentieth-century Surrealism, distinguished by their stillness, precision and philosophical depth.

As del Volante ultimately reflects Varo’s enduring fascination with systems of control and transcendence. It is a work in which machinery becomes metaphor, and where the act of steering becomes inseparable from the search for meaning itself.
