Remedios Varo’s Has Del Volante is a fascinating example of the artist’s extraordinary ability to merge movement, symbolism and metaphysical mystery into a single visionary image. Like much of Varo’s mature work, the painting exists within a universe where mechanical forms, spiritual ideas and dreamlike narratives become inseparable parts of a hidden cosmic order. The title itself carries an air of ambiguity and motion, suggesting direction, control and transformation. Throughout her career, Varo frequently explored themes of travel and navigation — not simply as physical acts, but as symbols of psychological and spiritual passage. Her figures often appear engaged in mysterious journeys through enclosed worlds governed by secret laws and unseen energies. In Has Del Volante, machinery and organic form seem to merge effortlessly. Varo’s inventions are never merely mechanical devices; they function as extensions of thought, intuition and imagination. Wheels, instruments and intricate structures recur throughout her work as symbols of systems operating beneath ordinary reality, hinting at deeper connections between science, consciousness and the unseen universe. What makes Varo’s paintings so compelling is the extraordinary precision with which she renders even her most impossible visions. Every architectural detail, texture and symbolic object appears carefully engineered, giving the composition an uncanny sense of plausibility. Her background in technical drawing allowed her to create worlds that feel internally coherent despite their dreamlike logic. At the same time, the painting retains a powerful atmosphere of mystery. Like the finest Surrealist works, Has Del Volante resists fixed interpretation. The viewer senses meaning everywhere — in the gestures, the forms, the movement through space — yet the full narrative remains elusive, inviting contemplation rather than certainty. Born in Spain in 1908 and later exiled to Mexico following the upheavals of war in Europe, Varo developed one of the most singular artistic voices of the twentieth century. Influenced by alchemy, mysticism, literature, psychology and science, she created paintings that continue to captivate audiences through their intellectual richness and imaginative depth. Has Del Volante remains a striking reflection of Varo’s visionary imagination — a world where travel becomes spiritual inquiry, machinery becomes symbolic language and every movement hints at hidden dimensions beyond visible reality. This giclee on canvas print beautifully captures the intricate textures, luminous colour and dreamlike atmosphere of Varo’s original composition, making it an exceptional piece for collectors and admirers of Surrealist art.
