In The Sign of the Painter, the figure of the artist becomes central—less a portrait, more a constructed identity shaped through symbols, tools, and ritual-like gestures that define what it means to create. Her work repeatedly reframes artistic practice as a controlled transformation of material and idea. Brushes, instruments, architectural forms, and contained spaces often function like components in a private mechanism, suggesting that painting is both process and philosophy rather than simple representation. In this context, The Sign of the Painter can be read as a statement about authorship itself—how the artist leaves traces not only through finished images, but through systems of construction embedded inside the work. Identity is not presented as fixed; it is built through repetition, structure, and symbolic language. Varo’s surrealism avoids spectacle and instead operates with precision. Meaning is embedded in relationships between objects and space, where every element contributes to a larger logic of transformation. The result is a visual language where creation becomes a disciplined act of inner engineering.
