The book “Flashback” by Bridget Riley and Michael Bracewell is a comprehensive look at Riley’s career, from her early days in the 1960s to her more recent works. It was published in 2009 and includes essays by both authors, an illustrated chronology, and an inventory of Riley’s works in British public collections.
Riley studied at the Goldsmiths College and the Royal College of Art in London, where she developed her unique style.
Her early works were influenced by Impressionism and Pointillism, but she soon began to explore the effects of optical illusion through geometric patterns and vibrant colors.
Riley's paintings often create an experience of movement and depth, challenging the viewer's perception.
In the 1960s, she gained international recognition, exhibiting in major galleries and participating in significant exhibitions, such as the 1965 "The Responsive Eye" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Her work has continued to evolve, incorporating various media, including printmaking and mural work.
Riley has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize in 1967 and being appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1969. Her influence extends beyond painting; she has also lectured and written extensively on art and perception.
Her
work remains significant in contemporary art, celebrated for its innovative approach to color and form.
