Echoes in a Shallow Bay arrived on 29 November 1985, the companion piece to Tiny Dynamine released just two weeks earlier — together forming what fans still regard as a genuine "lost fourth album" between Treasure and Victorialand. Like its twin EP, these four tracks began life as studio tests, trialling the production capacities of Guerilla studios in London, before the band decided the results were too good not to release.
This original Japanese 12" pressing carries the same darker, gothier undertow that sets this EP apart from its sunnier companion — "Pale Clouded White" leans into genuinely atmospheric, near-gothic territory, while "Melonella" stands as one of the strangest, most singular pieces in the band's entire catalogue: Elizabeth Fraser reciting Latin moth species names over a hypnotic, looping guitar figure unlike anything else they ever recorded.
Peaking at #65 on the UK album chart on original release, Echoes in a Shallow Bay remains a genuine deep-cut essential for serious Cocteau Twins collectors — Japanese pressings of this era are especially prized for their mastering quality and obi strip authenticity, making this a standout addition to any 4AD or dream-pop collection.
