COCTEAU TWINS

Victorialand, released 14 April 1986, marks a genuine departure in the Cocteau Twins story — recorded entirely as a duo, with bassist Simon Raymonde absent while working on This Mortal Coil's second album, Filigree & Shadow. Left with just guitar and voice, Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Fraser stripped the sound right back, dispensing with percussion and bass almost entirely in favour of delicate, reverb-drenched guitar filigrees and hushed, largely indecipherable vocals.

The result is one of the band's most intimate, ambient-leaning records — a world away from the fuller sound of Treasure the year before. "Feet Like Fins" features Richard Thomas on tabla, adding a rare additional texture to the otherwise sparse arrangements, while "The Thinner the Air" closes the album on a quietly unsettling note, opening with treated piano and eerie guitar leads beneath one of Fraser's most haunted vocal performances.

Victorialand debuted at #10 in the UK — the band's first ever Top 10 album placement. This original Japanese vinyl pressing offers the meticulous mastering and pressing quality the format is renowned for, making it a genuine essential for any serious Cocteau Twins or 4AD collector drawn to the band's more delicate, atmospheric side.
