Reverence, Revelation, Devotion is a substantial large-format hardback bringing together three major new painting series by Damien Hirst: the Reverence Paintings, The Revelations, and The Devotions. Created in parallel, these works reflect a process where multiple canvases were developed simultaneously, with layers built up over time to produce a dynamic, evolving surface.
The result is a body of abstract painting that feels both instinctive and controlled—balancing spontaneity with repetition. There’s a clear tension at play: gestures that seem immediate and expressive, yet shaped by a structured, almost mechanical approach. Hirst has described this push and pull as an attempt to channel something raw and internal, while also questioning what it means to paint with precision and detachment.
Designed by Atelier Dyakova, the book is richly produced and features over 300 full-colour illustrations covering 144 works. An accompanying essay by critic Jonathan Griffin places these paintings in dialogue with figures such as Agnes Martin, Louise Bourgeois, and Robert Ryman, situating the series within a broader history of abstraction.
