DESCRIPTION
The 2CD edition of Camphor, issued in May 2002, expands on the single-disc version by digging further into David Sylvian’s instrumental work. Rather than a straight compilation, a number of pieces are reworked or edited, giving the set a more continuous, ambient feel than a typical “best of”.
The second disc brings together Plight & Premonition and Mutability (detail), originally collaborative recordings with Holger Czukay. Their inclusion shifts the balance of the set — less song-based, more about texture, space and atmosphere.
Packaging on this edition is a step up from the standard release. The digipak was designed by Russell Mills (with Michael Webster), continuing his long association with Sylvian. It comes as a three-panel fold-out with an additional sheet that doubles as a poster, featuring photography by Kevin Westenberg. Cover imagery is by Charles Lindsay.
It’s one of those releases where the presentation and the music line up properly — not just an expanded version, but a more complete picture of this side of Sylvian’s work.
