This image (an oil on board, 1963-64) is a compelling portrait of Estella (Stella) West, known as This portrait (an oil on board, 1964) is of his cousin, Gerda Boehm, who was a significant figure in his life. The painting is known for its thickly worked pigment, giving it a sculptural quality. Auerbach’s technique involved building up layers of paint, which he would then scrape back and reapply, creating a textured and dynamic surface.
Gerda Boehm first sat for Auerbach in 1961 and continued to do so until 1982. This particular portrait is a poignant representation of their shared history and the emotional depth of their relationship.
