It serves as the soundtrack for the first animated adaptation of The Tale of Genji, a classic 11th-century Japanese novel written by noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu. The album blends electronic, ambient, and experimental sounds with traditional Japanese instruments like koto, flute, and drums, creating a rich, atmospheric experience. The tracklist includes pieces such as Tsukiyomi, Rajyoumon, Fujitsubo, and Mai, among others. The original release was under the Epic/Sony label, and it came with two inserts—one featuring film credits and illustrations, and another with production photos and information. This album has been reissued multiple times, including a 2025 reissue that maintains its unique sonic layering and mysterious yet elegant composition.
