Painting as a concept was fundamentally transformed by Jackson Pollock (1912–1956), one of the most influential and tragic figures of Abstract Expressionism. Emerging in the post-war United States, Pollock helped shift the center of modern art from Europe to America, redefining both the physical act of painting and the role of the artist.
Pollock’s early work reveals the influence of Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Mexican muralists such as José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, whose large-scale works encouraged experimentation with materials and technique. He was also deeply influenced by Surrealism, particularly its emphasis on the unconscious and automatic processes, aligning with his interest in Jungian psychoanalysis during the late 1930s and early 1940s.
Although Pollock is most widely associated with his celebrated drip paintings, this method was developed only midway through his career, beginning around 1947. Working on unstretched canvas laid on the floor, Pollock poured, dripped, and flung industrial enamel paints using sticks, hardened brushes, and syringes, abandoning the traditional easel and emphasizing movement, rhythm, and gesture.
The progression from Pollock’s earlier figurative and symbolic works to his fully abstract “action” paintings represents a genuine revolution in painting. The canvas became an arena in which the artist acted, and the resulting work recorded the physical and psychological presence of its maker, a concept later described as “action painting” by critic Harold Rosenberg.
Despite critical acclaim and institutional recognition, including the support of Peggy Guggenheim and major exhibitions in New York, Pollock struggled with alcoholism and personal instability throughout his life. His career was cut short by his death in a car accident in 1956, at the age of 44.
Today, Jackson Pollock is widely regarded as one of the greatest modern American painters, and his influence continues to resonate across generations of artists working in abstraction, performance, and conceptual art.
