Her moments with Bowie in the film are very special (though they never actually met), and her singing of the 1920s title song around which the entire screenplay centres, disturbing, unforgettable. Jean Cocteau described Marlene as a "frigate with all sails flying, a figurehead, a Chinese fish, a lyre-bird, a legend, a wonder." At 77 in "Just A Gigolo", the legend becomes even stronger, so the album rightly begins with her.
The film's soundtrack had to musically reflect the era of the story, which is why today's most outstanding interpreters of "period pop", The Manhatten Transfer were asked to present three haunting ancient melodies, two with new lyrics for the film. The internationally "yesterday sound" of The Pasadena Roof Orchestra, plus The Ragtimers orchestra which hit the Hit Parades of so many countries with their Scott Joplin-style music from "The Sting" film, added still more great standards of the Twenties. But among the old-time musical gems of the soundtrack are some new diamonds, including a David Bowie composition he wrote on the set between scenes. He recorded the accompaniment for his "Revolutionary" song himself. The track opens with David playing and "la-la-ing", then combines with an instrumental and full chorus version, finally returning to David departing, accompanied by the chorus. Finally, to the authentic original soundtrack sound of the Twenties we have added a totally contrasted to-day-version tribute, by the dynamic Village People, to the song that has remained evergreen for well over half a century and inspired the "Just A Gigolo" film.
