About This Sculpture

This beautifully crafted figurine is a faithful three-dimensional interpretation of Rene Magritte’s iconic 1964 painting The Son of Man. Produced by the renowned Parastone Mouseion workshop, the piece captures the enigmatic nature of Magritte’s original work — the suited man in bowler hat, face obscured by a hovering green apple, standing before a sea and cloudy sky.

The sculpture is finished in Parastone’s signature museum-quality style, combining subtle textures, carefully blended colour tones, and a matte/soft-gloss finish that highlights the surreal strangeness Magritte intended. Each piece is individually hand-painted, making every figurine slightly unique.

Origins of the Artwork

The Son of Man (oil on canvas, 116 × 89 cm) was commissioned by Harry Torczyner during the summer of 1963 and delivered in August 1964. Torczyner, a friend and patron of Magritte, requested a self-portrait inspired by the Flemish tradition of portraiture, referencing works by Peter Paul Rubens and James Ensor, both of whom painted themselves wearing distinctive hats.

The title was proposed by Belgian poet Irène Hamoir, a key voice in the Belgian Surrealist movement. As with much of Magritte’s work, the imagery invites interpretation — the apple both conceals and reveals, questioning identity, appearance, and the boundaries between the visible and the hidden.
