Syd Barrett – Barrett (1971 Japanese First Press LP – Odeon / Harvest OP-80173)
Issued in 1971, Barrett was Syd Barrett's second and final solo studio album, further cementing his reputation as one of the most original and influential figures in British rock. While his recording career was remarkably brief, Barrett's inventive songwriting, surreal lyrics and unconventional melodies have inspired countless musicians, making this album an essential chapter in the history of Pink Floyd and psychedelic music.
This original Japanese first pressing (Odeon / Harvest OP-80173), released under the Japanese title ウィズ・ピンク・フロイド ("With Pink Floyd"), is one of the most desirable international editions of the album. Manufactured to the exceptionally high standards for which Japanese vinyl is renowned, it combines outstanding sound quality with beautifully produced packaging, making it a prized addition to any serious Syd Barrett or Pink Floyd collection.
Produced by David Gilmour, with contributions from fellow Pink Floyd members Richard Wright and Jerry Shirley, Barrett perfectly balances Barrett's whimsical creativity with sympathetic production. Standout performances including Baby Lemonade, Gigolo Aunt, Dominoes, Love Song and Effervescing Elephant demonstrate why the album has become recognised as a psychedelic classic and an essential companion to The Madcap Laughs.
Original Japanese first pressings have become increasingly difficult to locate, particularly complete examples with their original inserts and packaging. Collectors value OP-80173 not only for its rarity but also for its superb manufacturing quality and its place among the finest Japanese Pink Floyd-related releases of the early 1970s.
Whether you're expanding a Syd Barrett collection or searching for an exceptional Japanese pressing of this landmark album, Barrett (OP-80173) remains one of the most sought-after editions available.
