Japanese death poetry, known as jisei, is a traditional form of poetry written by individuals, often samurai or monks, as they approach their final moments. These poems reflect themes of impermanence and transience, which are central to Zen Buddhism.
The practice dates back to at least the 7th century, with one of the earliest recorded jisei written by Prince Otsu in 686 CE.
Jisei can be composed in various forms, including kanshi (Chinese-style poetry), waka (classical Japanese poetry), and haiku.
