A HISTORIE
In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare’s plays for television.
The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical
and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors.
“And gentlemen in England now a bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.”
Insulted by the Dauphin, the newly crowned King Henry V
gathers his troops for war. But Henry must convince his men that he has left his wild days behind and prove himself as a leader . . .
Henry V tells a tale of intrigue and betrayal,
courtly romance and a heroic battle against outrageous odds.
The lead, played here by David Gwillim, is one of the most
coveted of roles with inspiring lines including the St Crispin’s Day speech.
-------------------------
"O, for a muse of fire that would ascend
The brightest heaven of invention:
A kingdom for a stage, princes to act,
and monarchs to behold the swelling scene . . .
. . . Who Prologue-like your humble patience pray
Gently to hear, kindly to judge, our play….”

William Shakespeare
Hys Most Excellent
The Life Of
Henry the Fift
HENRY V
ABOUT HENRY V
The most nationalistic of Shakespeare ’s plays, HENRY V
is a portrait of a young man who transforms from the irresponsible rebel to a majestic monarch,
the story of an English world fighting for its life and an English King proving himself as
ruler of that world. David Gwillim is excellent, the actor growing in stature with his character,
finding the human being within the public figure until the King
emerges a national hero in a setting of military glory, idealism, heroism and pageantry . . .
It seems likely that Shakespeare
wrote this play during 1599, probably in the spring.
It appeared in print, in a debased text in (probably) August 1600,
when it was said to have ‘been sundry times played by the Right Honourable the Lord Chamberlain his servant’.
