Jan. 2015: Well, after taking a break from all things Downie for the last couple of years, and not updating the pages or following how his work has gone, I'm surprised that the prices have dramatically gone down. No idea why and I think it is just a temporary measure - hopefully, for I do think his work is as magically naive as anything you will see out there. Come on, doesn't seeing a Downie work make you feel warm inside?
It happens to all artists. They come in and out of fashion. But now is the time to buy as the prices are low. I'm now in the market to buy stuff but bear in mind the prices offered will reflect the current market value and not the past market.
Prices paid for 30cm x 30 cm of the classic Downie stuff will be £40 plus up to £10.00 towards postage and should include as much documentation as possible. 40cm x 30cm will be £50 plus up to £10.00 towards postage and again should include as much documentation as possible. The 'Cornish' scenes are currently bordering on the unsaleable and the ovals are worth no more than £10 including postage. Bigger Cornwall scenes no more than £20 incl. postage.
Payment will be made within 24 hours of receipt of the picture by cheque. Please e-mail details of painting on offer with scans as anything sent unsolicited will just be returned. Unfortunately, I no longer have the time to authenticate Downie's work on an individual basis. It was getting time consuming as obviously it was a free service and I was inundated with requests.
Selling the Work of Other Northern Artists
Are you a Northern Artist? It's a loose term, I know, but I would call it someone who, even vaguely, has been influenced by Lowry or Arthur Delaney or any of the others from the British School of Northern Art. If so then read on:
I'm planning to expand these pages to include work by other artists. I would design the pages to fit the works of indivdual artists with a bio and gallery of each individual artist plus the artist can display pieces for sale. How it would work is the artist, after sending a bio and images of some of the work, would submit a work (or works) with the price they want for it (obviously the lower the price the quicker it will sale - if it is an inflated price it will just not sale so newer artists should bear that in mind). I would then add an agreed amount on as my percentage for the work undertaken.
When someone is interested in a particular work I would notify the artist and arrange the sell as well as passing on the amount paid to the artist. The artist would send the work to me and I will do the rest.
Moreover, ask yourself how did you arrive at this page? Because of love of a Northern Artist or Northern Art. And that is how customers come here as well.
I think it could be exciting and good as it gives lesser artists or new artists a chance to have a place to sell their work. There would be no fees or listing fees for unsold items - you will only actually earn money from here which is a good thing in itself. I think there is definately a gap in the market for this service from an artist's point of view.
For the buyer, they will get something beautiful to hang on their walls - something that might not otherwise come onto the market.
It would mean alot of work on my part but if the rewards are there then that is incentive enough to do it.
