Artist/Renaissance Man

During Leonardo's secondFlorentine period he did a great deal of dissection and made himself intoincomparably the finest anatomist of his day, but he also worked on three majorartistic projects. The most important was the commission given by the city toits two greatest artists, Leonardo and Michelangelo (who disliked each other intensely). This was for two gigantic wall-paintings, to commemorate Florentinevictories, in the Council Chamber of the new Republic. Neither was everfinished. Leonardo's was to represent the Battle of Anghiari, but no more than the central group was ever painted: and this was apparently in some waxmedium, in imitation of an antique technique described by Pliny the Elder, which failed miserably. Work was begun in 1503 and stopped in 1505.
