There is something about the image on the front cover that brings all the horrors of this time, this place, home. It is simply a mother holding the hand of her child. Something as simple as that that since time began has been the most natural gesture known to mankind. Mother and child. And yet that simple gesture the Nazis tried to eradicate from the history books. It is heartbreaking if you think about it. Hands held. Love. Simple love. Love simple.

Ninety-eight per cent of the Jewish population of Warsaw perished in the Second World War, together with one-quarter of the Polish population: in all, some 720,000 souls, a number that dwarfs the destruction of life in Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined and is undoubtedly the greatest slaughter perpetrated within a single city in human history.
