Though Picasso's Neo-Classical phase only lasted a brief period in the early 1920s it is an important phase in the history of modern art, perhaps the most important given how influential it remains to this day. And here is one of the masterpieces, Seated Woman. Not a trace of Cubism is to be found in the Neo-Classical work. Rather, there is a vagueness, a hugeness... Picasso seems to have little interest in meticulously recording appearances and in their vagueness you cannot place them in time. Each and every one is timeless, could have been painted yesterday, and, consequently, are still revelant as the day the oils were placed onto canvas. The figures are like giants with underdone limbs and torsos seemingly chiselled straight from the slab. They are clumsy, simplied people (as in The Village Dance) but they are unforgettable figures. A 'Picasso huge person' has the calm grandeur of classicism. It's a simple fact: just look at a few of them for awhile, really look, and you will feel that calming quality. Seated Woman is a prime example of this. Calming, undeniably beautiful, modern and yet timeless.
