Like his 1978 debut, For You, Prince composed, played, sang, produced and arranged all the songs on his 1979 follow-up, simply titled Prince. While Prince features a number of great dance songs, it also gave his future audience an idea of what they could expect from a talent many consider the finest pop composer of the 1980s. Barely into his 20's, Prince already possessed a remarkable musical vocabulary and subterranean understanding of an untold number of musical genres--ones he was rapidly combining in a way no one had heard before. A soundtrack to a movie so appalling that it is infinitely wiser to let the record stand on its own merits. While Prince cavorted in purple kitchen foil and rode his Harley in high heels, the real star of the film, the music, was doing all the talking. A knit of funk and rock, a heavily stylized Hendrix guitar lick here and there, and a wilfully danceable backbeat all made for a huge commercial smash, and the first real international introduction for many people to a star-in-waiting. Darling Nikki accidentally set the PMRC ball rolling, but the heady lilt of the title track and the crushing When Doves Cry can pardon him that

Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of When Doves Cry), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't know why that warped sermonette introduces Let's Go Crazy (one thing you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher Darling Nikki (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim Emerson

Leave it to Prince to put the best music of Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, his return to major-label status, on a hidden track. That would be No. 18, a.k.a. Pretty Man. A deep-fried groove and sax by guest Maceo Parker underpin a hilarious mock self-celebration ("I write a check and the bank bounce") that proves the Artist can flow at full power any time he wants to. And whether Rave will prove as durable as 1995's vastly underrated Gold Experience, it's a fine Prince album. Despite his current affiliation with Clive Davis, who returned Carlos Santana to Billboard's No. 1 slot by pairing him prominently with a number of guest stars, Prince employs the likes of Sheryl Crow, Ani DiFranco, and Eve to season his own blend, not to run off with the whole steaming pot. (Just to show who's boss, he includes a funky re-creation of Crow's hit Everyday Is a Winding Road that renders the song nearly unrecognizable.) The sounds here, from the Parade-style balladry of [Eye] Love U, But [Eye] Don't Trust U Anymore to the frenetic title track, won't surprise longtime followers, but they won't find a lot of reasons to complain, either--Rickey Wright

After an adventurous run through fields of Beatlesque psychedelia, Prince seemed ready to get back to the task of creating the epic that both his audience and adoring critics had been demanding since Purple Rain. Originally put together as a three-LP opus titled Crystal Ball (but pared down pre-release by the picky artist), Sign O' the Times wasn't exactly the historic merger of rock and R&B that the world had been expecting. Instead, it played like an ultimate mix-tape of Prince-ly styles--from grinding, house music-inspired funk (Housequake) to idiosyncratic pieces of irresistibly sweet pop fare (Starfish And Coffee). Yet, the man's singular outlook could constantly be identified; and as varied as the music got, that outlook worked as a uniting factor. Abandoning the Revolution and returning to the one-man-band ethic made the overall sound of Sign O' the Times far more spare than recent efforts. Various members did make random contributions, and the entire group is featured on a lone live track (the driving extenda-groove, It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night); but Prince seemed adamant about unshackling himself from the responsibilities of being a particular band's leader, and constructed an album that reflected his evolving musical vision, rather than the Revolution's signature sound. Though that sound still rears its head--particularly on Play In The Sunshine--on Sign O' the Times, it's only part of the picture. The other parts are as discombobulated as Prince the one-man-band had always been. Social relevance as a funky turn (Sign O' The Times), spiritual strength as heavy metal gospel (the Cross), and sex in every form and position possible were all moves Prince had already done, or at least hinted at. But never before had he delivered these moves with such maturity, or as such a complete package, which is why Sign O' the Times is undoubtedly among the apexes of Prince's career

It begins with the insistent drip-drop of a sequencer and ends with some old school R&B. In between, the artist who was still calling himself Prince unfurls an encyclopedia of moods, genres, and grooves. Widely heralded as a groundbreaker in 1987, when it was released, some of the music in oh-so-'80s synths sounds a bit dated. Yet this two-CD set is clearly the sound of a performer at the height of his power. On songs like the title track, If I Was Your Girlfriend, and the thunderous the Cross, Prince proves why the hype was justified --Amy Linden

In order to finish out Prince's contract with the label he abandoned for his own imprint, Warner Bros. released Vault in 1999. Though he'd long since been called the Artist Formerly Known as Prince, our boy apparently wanted so little to do with this project that he had Warner use his old name on the album. The note stating that these songs were written between 1985 and 1994 and "intended 4 private use only" makes the artist's distance from Vault's release that much clearer. In most other performer's cases, such a collection would be full of second-rate, demo-quality cast-offs, barely worth a listen. For an artist as prolific and versatile as Prince, however, it's simply another chance to glimpse the breadth of his mercurial talent. From the churning, Al Green-ish R&B of 5 Women to the evocative piano-and-percussion-framed When the Lights Go Down and the sad, stately ballad There Is Lonely, Prince is in rare form. Listening to these satisfying, fully formed pieces with the knowledge that they were never meant to be heard only makes one wonder what else lies in the Purple One's vault

Warner Bros. publicity materials peg this collection of previously unreleased recordings from Prince's long tenure at the company as "a noteworthy musical event." But Prince fans expecting something on the order of 1993's B-Sides disc or the oft-bootlegged a Black Album are bound to be disappointed by the Vault. While well crafted and groove-wise, these 10 tracks provide little surprise beyond their general vapidity. Sparks occasionally fly, as on the Al Green-influenced 5 Women and the funny Chuck Berry nod Sarah, but this set intrigues much more than it entertains. Ironically for a 1999 release, it's often more fit for smooth-jazz radio than an apocalyptic party--Rickey Wright

Considerably more streamlined than previous compilations the Hhits 1and the hits 2, the 17 songs that make up the Very Best of Prince offer a nice tour through the Purple One's chart successes for Warner Brothers from 1978 to 1993. Mixed in among chart toppers like the quirky When Doves Cry, Hendrix-fueled mania of Let's Go Crazy and stripped-down funk of Kiss are enough brilliant moments to make you wish the guy had focused more on music and less on the identity shifts that characterized most of the '90s. Starting with the 1979 #1 I Wanna Be Your Lover, Prince's pop sensibilities and inquisitive nature have found him cleverly bouncing back and forth between the twin poles of sex and spirituality. Whether it's the runaway pledge of faith found in I Would Die 4 U, sly lasciviousness of Gett Off or battle-of-the-sexes throw-down with Sheena Easton on U Got The Look, this Minneapolis native's way with a hook makes more of an impression in retrospect than his ability to shock. Other highlights include the millennial jam 1999, chilling view of the world Sign O' The Times, gorgeous Diamonds And Pearls and irresistible Alphabet Street

Taken literally, this album's title is sure to cause endless arguments. Nothing from Dirty Mind, not a trace of the early anthem Controversy, no Erotic City--no non-LP cuts at all, save some edited single versions--and a cold shoulder to the criminally out-of-print Gold Experience. Damn. As a compendium of 17 key A-sides from 1979 to 1992, however, The Very Best of Prince is (ahem) a quick-'n'-dirty review of the days when the Artist was, in the estimation of R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, one of the weirdest musicians in the Top 10. Blessed with both creative cunning and the wish to reach every listener possible, Prince revitalized rock and soul modes from the sex-crazed (Little Red Corvette) to the cryptically spiritual (Purple Rain). Often he blurred lines between attitudes as surely as he did musical ones; the New Testament image of Thieves in the Temple became in his hands a complaint about a stolen girlfriend. Though a fine party artifact, this disc is still likely to prove too scanty even for many casual Prince fans. --Rickey Wright
