5 Stars Out of 5 - truly, a masterpiece in the history of World Cinema.
Everything is sung - even the mostmundane dialogue - in director Jacques Demy's enchanting Frenchthrowback to the Hollywood musicalsof the late 1920s. The stunning design(Cherbourg citizens allowed theirbuildings to be painted pink and red)and Catherine Deneuve's ethereal performance add to the fairy-talequalities of the haunting love storybetween a shop girl and a garageattendant. It's when he leaves her pregnant to fight in the Algerian Warthat Demy's tuneful heartbreakerreaches the dizzy romantic heights.
Michel Legrand's gorgeous score includes the standard I Will Wait for You and Watch What Happens.
Absolutely beguiling. Has there ever been a better musical? Definately not. This film is one of those rare movies that will stay with you forever. Not only will you find yourself humming the soundtrack to yourself for months afterwards, but the beautiful sets, costumes and casting with never cease to amaze.
Imagine our world mirroring this world - the world of Demy. Everything in life is sung instead of spoken. If nothing else the world would be more poetic.
