This image (an oil on board, 1963-64) is a compelling portrait of Estella (Stella) West, known as E.O.W., who was a significant figure in Auerbach’s life. Stella was an amateur actress and a widow with three children when she met Auerbach in 1947. She became one of his most frequent sitters, posing for him over a span of twenty years.

This painting is characterized by Auerbach’s distinctive technique of applying thick layers of paint, which he would then scrape back and reapply, creating a textured and dynamic surface. The portrait captures the essence of Stella through its intense and expressive brushwork, reflecting Auerbach’s deep connection with his subject.

Auerbach painted Stella in numerous portraits, often working in her home three evenings a week, always by electric light. This consistent and intimate setting contributed to the unique and intense quality of his portraits of her.
