Antonello da Messina
Known as: Italian Renaissance painter
Little is known of Antonello da Messina's early life though it is probable that he was apprenticed in Messina and in Palermo. At around 20 years of age, he was in Naples and in the next few years was a pupil of the painter Niccolò Colantonio.
His work was influenced by Flemish painters (sitters turned three-quarters) but it is unclear where the influence came from or whether he indeed visited the Netherlands...

In 1474-76, he stayed in Venice and produced alot of the work that he is chiefly known for today, in particular his portrait paintings.

Sibiu Crucifixion (c. 1455), Abraham Served by the Angels, St. Jerome Penitent and Salting Madonna (all 1460), Madonna with Child (1461), Portrait of a Man (1465-1470), Salvator Mundi (1470), Annunciation, St. Jerome in His Study (both 1474), Condottiero (1475, below), St. Sebastian (c. 1475-76), and Virgin Annunciate (c. 1476) .
