Review: British illustrator Russell Mills has used the music and lyrics of all of avant-garde musician Brian Eno's songs as the basis for the 57 mixed-media interpretations reproduced here (all in full color). Mills's surreal creations are rarely literal renditions of the texts, but rather represent personal interpretations, sometimes informed by Eno's commentary. They therefore can stand independently of the songs. Each illustration is accompanied by Eno's lyrics (most published here for the first time), along with notes by both Eno and Mills and extracts from their notebooks, illuminating the thought processes and working methods behind the songs and images. Rick Poynor contributes five essays on Eno's artistic theory and practice. A fascinating, visually beautiful document.

An avant-garde ensemble playing the 1978 Brian Eno piece which put ambient music on the map. Eno's idea was to make a series of tape loops into tightly composed Muzak. He wanted a sonic backdrop for bland public spaces that would reward close listening. Bang on a Can, playing acoustic and electric instruments, breathe life into it, making the music's neutrality seem coldly beautiful. The piece is divided into four parts, each consisting of a few gentle, minimal figures, calmly repeated and shifted. Rhythm is eliminated and time seems to stretch. What is revealed is the sensuousness possible in a single note. Music has never been the same. This is the best place to hear where it changed.

Released in 1981, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a collaboration between ambient pioneer Brian Eno and Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. On My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, the two strong-willed musicians manage to come to a meeting of the minds, blending Byrne's herky-jerky funk with Eno's atmospheric sound sculpting. More than anything, this is a large album, intent on pushing itself to the front of the listener's consciousness. Abundant percussion (everything from booming tribal drums to eerie electronics) reverberates in the background while Byrne and Eno toss all manner of found sounds, field recordings, and radio broadcasts into the mix. What results is a groundbreaking album that introduced a generation to the dazzling possibilities offered by electronic recording techniques.
