Reviews:
This sublime, tranquil recording features 11 haunting ambient tone poems for treated piano and ghostly electronic backdrops. They are crafted from simple chords, arpeggios, or melodies frequently trailed by delicate electronic whispers that produce dreamy results. Even though Budd and Eno chose to compose and record with a minimalist style, their gorgeous, moody music evokes so much more, for the reverberating spaces between the notes are just as important as the notes themselves. In an interesting experiment, both Against the Sky and An Echo of Night explore the same melancholic musical theme in different settings--the former is a sparse piano piece with gentle electronic treatments, the latter is a murky synth work set against a nocturnal outdoor backdrop. (Budd later explored the theme again as the ethereal elegy Olancha Farewell on his 1986 solo album Lovely Thunder.)
Beautifully understated, the slow-motion ballet of The Pearl is striking ambient impressionism that was highly original in its day, well before the myriad of New Age imitators its composers spawned, and it remains fresh and vital two decades later.
--Bryan Reesman
Producers:
Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois
Personnel:
Brian Eno (various instruments)
Harold Budd (piano)
The music of California-born composer Harold Budd has little in common with the hypnotic
Eastern-influenced pulsing of fellow minimalists like Philip Glass or Terry Riley. Instead,
his sometimes atonal but often pastoral and lulling compositions for piano most recall the influence of
Erik Satie. For their
second collaboration,
The Pearl, Budd and co-writer/producer Brian Eno eschew the lengthy explorations
of their previous album,
Ambient 2: The Plateaux Of Mirror, in favor of 11 brief miniatures between two and
five minutes each. Given evocative, imagistic titles like Late October and Lost in the Humming Air,
Budd's watery, occasionally jazz-inflected piano solos are subtly supported by non-obtrusive layers of
synthesizers, tape effects and other instrumentation by Eno and co-producer Daniel Lanois. Less
trance-inducing than Eno's full-fledged ambient works,
The Pearl is nonetheless a gentle and quiet record as accessible to fans of
Satie and Bill Evans as it is to minimalist and ambient enthusiasts

Review:
A collection of moody instrumental experiments, The Shutov Assembly was recorded by Brian Eno between 1985 and 1990. An overt dalliance with atonality, this recording abandons most conventional concepts of pitch, modes, and scales. With most of the 10 compositions shifting gradually and without discernible focus, this is one of Eno's more varied ambient collections. Other than treated keyboard, conventional instrumentation is eschewed. The final recipe results in one ghostly, subdued soundscape after another. Brian Eno's minimalist leanings have rarely been in greater evidence than on this album. Strongly recommended.
--Mitch Myers
Recorded between 1985 and 1990. The 10 pieces on Brian Eno's 1992 ambient collection
The Shutov Assembly were recorded between 1985 and 1990. In the intervening
two years, however, artists such as the Orb and the KLF had placed Eno's concepts of ambient
music into the context of dance music, creating ambient house, one of the '90s most important club trends. As a
result, critical and public opinion of this album at the time was mixed-to-negative, with many
complaints that the pieces broke no new ground. A single listen belies this statement, as
The Shutov Assembly is unique in Eno's ambient work. Several of the randomly
titled pieces have a dark, vaguely disturbing cast far removed from the usual placidity of Eno's ambient work, while
others bring the world music aspects of some of Eno's other projects to the ambient sphere.
The Shutov Assembly is an intriguing and satisfying work

Brian Eno / Jah Wobble

Review:
Composed as a soundtrack for a Derek Jarman film, this is in large part a return to the placid atmospheric style of Brian Eno's Another Green World period. Jah Wobble's role is limited to providing a bass rumble, though he cranks up the tempo deliciously on Unusual Balance and the tracks featuring ex-Can drummer Jaki Liebeziet. A gift from the ambient God for hard-core Enophiles.

review:
In 1973, fed up with Bryan Ferry's domineering in Roxy Music, Eno leapt into a solo career that would find him championing the "art" in "artifice". This record is a who's who of the then-burgeoning English art-rock scene, featuring Robert Wyatt, Robert Fripp, and every member of Roxy Music except its leader (thus answering the musical question, "What if Eno had helmed the third Roxy record instead of Ferry?"). Warm Jets sports a lightheartedness that was a refreshing antidote to the pomposity of Yes and ELP on the dark side of art-rock's spectrum, with nonsensical, sound-based couplets such as Oh headless chicken / How can those teeth stand so much kicking? Listen to Fripp's furious guitars on Baby's On Fire and Blank Frank: it's incredible, Velvet Underground-inspired rock in a scene that had forgotten what rocking meant.

Recorded at Island Studios, London, England in September 1974
Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy is a grab bag of freaky science-fiction-dipped
confections. It sports songs that are by turns creepy (The Great Pretender, whose whirling, oozing
keyboard line and synthesized vocals approximate delirium tremens or a hatching hive of maggots),
absurdist/philosophical (Burning Airlines [Give You So Much More]), or straight-out
rockers (the delectably intense Third Uncle, propelled by the churning guitar of Roxy Music's
Phil Manzenera). Concurrent with
Bowie's alien aesthetic, Eno's tunes are infinitely more otherwordly and warped, making
use of the full palette of bizarro synthesizer effects and, in Put A Straw Under Baby, the Portsmouth Sinfonia,
whose members have no knowledge of their instruments. The songs, however, are as inventive and
appealing as their treatments and make for Eno's most solid--and experimental--pop album

The whole of
Thursday Afternoon consists of one 61-minute track, itself an edit of a much longer piece designed as the accompaniment for a video piece by artist Russell Mills. In the tradition of 19th century program music, Thursday Afternoon attempts to musically evoke the feelings of a specific experience. Amusingly, the experience being evoked is the tedium of a nondescript, unexciting day. While it's perhaps up to the individual listener as to whether this makes for an entirely satisfying listening experience, Thursday Afternoon is one of Brian Eno's most intellectually intriguing pieces. Thursday Afternoon stretches the concept of ambient music nearly to the breaking point--the piece consists almost entirely of single notes and simple chords held seemingly without end, with the occasional wash of piano notes wafting through. Or, to put it another way, nothing happens. Frequently
