This absorbing programme examines the dramatic execution, in September 1944, of Field Marshal Montgomery's plan, codenamed operation "Market Garden". By this, all major river crossings in Holland were to be seized by the Allies in a single blow, to secure a bridgehead across the Rhine. This would lead to a take-over of the German industrial heartland of the Ruhr, and a decisive thrust towards Berlin. It was hoped that the defeat of Germany, and the end of the Third Reich, would soon ensue. However, the plan was only partially successful, and there were over 7,500 casualties.

This carefully researched account analyses the events leading up to the battle, the progress of the fighting, and the factors responsible for the Allied defeat. Contemporary film material (including glider landings, parachute drops and movements of men and equipment), photographs and sound recordings from British, German and Dutch sources, and strategic maps, all help to explain the course of this key battle of World War II.

The Battle of the Somme (1916) is one of the most successful British films ever made. It is estimated that more than 20 million tickets were sold in Great Britain in the first two months of release, and the film was distributed worldwide to prove Britain’s commitment to the First World War. It is the source of many of the conflict’s most iconic images.

The Battle of the Somme gave its 1916 audience an unprecedented insight into the realities of trench warfare, controversially including the depiction of dead and wounded soldiers. It shows scenes of the build-up to the infantry offensive, including the massive preliminary bombardment, coverage of the first day of the battle – the bloodiest single day in the British Army’s history – and depictions of the small gains and huge costs of the attack. 'DUCK' LANDING: Designed in 1942, its official name was the DUKW Amphibious Vehicle but to the American G.I.s in World War Two, it was the "Duck". The slowest and least lovely vessel ever to put to sea, the 'Duck' proved to be a vital machine in the Allied amphibious victories - from the D-Day beaches in Normandy to the Pacific Islands of Saipan and Iwo Jima.

RADAR: At the beginning of World War Two, radar was in its infancy. Huge towers were erected along Britain's south coast which tracked German planes as they crossed the English Channel. Without radar and the advanced warning of the German arrival it gave, Britain could well have lost the Battle of Britain. But as the war progressed radar developed at a fantastic rate. When the brilliant scientists at MIT got to work on it they found literally hundreds of uses for radar from aiming gunsights to identifying ships at sea. And the radar systems got smaller and smaller until they could be carried in the fuselage of a ship or in the control room of a submarine.

HITLER'S VENGEANCE WEAPONS: From a remote German island in the Baltic Sea, the first successful launch of a rocket into the stratosphere took place in October 1942. Originally all the scientist had wanted to do was go to the moon, but instead they had created Hitler's most advanced weapon of terror.

Michael Rennie stars in this tense, action-packed thriller set in occupied Europe during the Second World War and based on real life events.

Stefan (Michael Rennie), a Polish resistance fighter, is rounded up by the Nazis and sent to a forced labour camp. He finds himself at Peenemunde, a top secret base where German scientists are working on a new and deadly form of weapon - the V.1 flying bomb.

Now, the race is on to get the information back to Britain. Stefan teams up with another prisoner, Anna (Milly Vitale) - and together they manage to get the news out: a top level conference is scheduled at Peenemunde for factory managers and technicians from all over the Reich.

The R.A.F's response is quick and lethal. They launch a devastating 1,000 bomber raid against the rocket base - setting the project back months. But the menace of the V.1 s is not over yet. A V.1 must be captured intact and sent back to London for analysis - another dangerous task for the Polish Resistance...

When a young French idealist (John Clements) arrives without papers, Marie shields him from the Germans and enlists him in their cause to disrupt the German war effort and smuggle Allied airmen back to England. As the Audacity and success of the French Resistance increases, the Germans decide to call in the SS in order to establish obedience, But will the German's brutal suppression force the French to betray their fellow countrymen, or will the spirit of French patriotism stand from against Nazi tyranny?
