Item Details

This has the darkness of, I don't know, George orwell's 1984. Not surprising really as Bowie was writing an album based on the novel but gave up when running into problems with Orwell's estate.

This 1999 UK 11-track 24-bit digitally remastered CD album comes with a picture sleeve booklet.

"Then there's the new album, which will be out as soon as the cover art's OK'd by RCA. It's a painting of me changing into a dog, right, and they're a bit worried that its cock shows. But apart from the cock everything's all right." (May 1974)

"Things like Rock and Roll With Me and 1984 were embryonic of what I wanted to do. I tried all kinds of things. It was a not a concept album. It was a collectiom of things.

"And I didn't have a band. So, that's where the tension came in. I couldn't believe I had finished it when I did. I had done so much of it myself. I never want to be in that position again.

"It was frightening trying to make an album with no support behind you. I was very much on my own. It was my most difficult album. It was a relief that it did so well.

"The songs on Diamond Dogs that I got the biggest kick out of - like Rock and Roll With Me and 1984 - gave me the knowledge there was another album at least inside of me that I was going to be happy with.

"Diamond Dogs was a hard sort of album to live with at the time, but it does mature, doesn't it, and gains potency with time?

"I don't like a lot of my albums. A complete album it would be hard for me to say I like. I like bits and pieces. A bit of it works exceedingly well, and a lot of it only works." (June 1978)
