| International Gothic What Is It? International Gothic Towards the end of the 14th century there arose anew approach to Nature which first found expression in the Court art of Franceand Burgundy (Broederlam, Limbourg), but which rapidly spread to Italy,Germany (Lochner), and Bohemia (Master of Wittingau). As a style itremained fundamentally Gothic, for the new realism was confined to details, particularly to details of landscape, of animals, and of costume. This form ofrealism has almost nothing in common with the slightly later realism, classicaland naturalistic in inspiration, practised by Masaccio and Donatello. Aspectsof both may, however, be detected in the work of Ghiberti. In Italy theprincipal exponents of International Gothic were Gentile da Fabriano and Pisanello: a comparison between the Madonna by Gentile in the Royal Coll.and the Masaccio Madonna in the NG, London; or the Gentile Adoration inthe Uffizi, Florence, and Masaccio's Brancacci Chapel, will make clear thedifference of intention as well as of style. The influence of International Gothic remained active for many years, and was even revived towards the end of the15th century.
