Lorenzo Ghiberti
Known as: Italian Early Renaissance Sculptor
The most famous thing Lorenzo Ghiberti is famous for today is that he made two of the three bronze doors of the Baptistry of Florence. He made the first one after winning a competition in 1402. Before that, he had been a goldsmith, but from 1403-24 he worked principally on the first Doors, and, after completion, was commissioned to do the second pair. That lasted from 1425-52...

To complete these great projects, he established a large workshop. This became the training ground for artists and painters like Donatello, Masolino and Uccello.

He still undertook other projects during this period: namely the statues St John Baptist (1414) and the St Matthew (1419-22) for the
church of Orsanmichele. Also, between 1417 and 1427 he made two reliefs for the font of the Baptistry in Siena. In 1418, he produced a model of the dome of Florence Cathedral.
He visited Venice in 1425 before returning to Florence where the following year he was commissioned to make the remaining and third pair of doors, He also made the bronze shrine for the Three Martyrs (1428), the bronze Reliquary of St Zenobius (1432-42), the statue St Stephen for Orsanmichele (1428) among others. He also designed stained-glass for Florence Cathedral.
Towards the end of his life he wrote his Commentarii which included his autobiography.
