Random and bite-sized facts on all things on the mythical band U.K.Subs. Totally random but totally fascinating if you're into it. Do you know U.K. Subs now?
--
Before the U.K. Subs emerged, Charlie Harper had been involved in London's R&B scene, including singing with a group called the Marauders. He was older than many of the musicians associated with the first wave of British punk, bringing experience from a very different musical world into the new movement.
--
The group began in 1976 as the Subversives before shortening its name to the U.K. Subs. The change gave them a sharper, more direct identity, although the original name reflected the same rebellious spirit that would define their punk material.
--
John Peel championed the U.K. Subs early enough to record them for BBC radio sessions in 1977 and 1978, before their debut studio album appeared. Those sessions helped document a band whose live reputation was growing faster than its record-company prospects.
--
Despite forming in 1976 and building a following on London's punk circuit, the U.K. Subs did not release their debut studio album, Another Kind of Blues, until 1979. The delay came despite early radio support and extensive gigging, illustrating how difficult it could be for punk bands to secure a proper recording deal.
--
The U.K. Subs' performance on the 1977 Farewell to the Roxy compilation was later issued as Live Kicks by Stiff Records. According to the band's historical archive, the release happened without the group's input, and the rights to the original Roxy recording had been traded away by Charlie Harper in exchange for beer.
--
The idea of giving each studio album a title beginning with the next letter of the alphabet was suggested by drummer Pete Davies. He had previously floated the idea to members of This Heat, before bringing it into the U.K. Subs. What began as a simple concept eventually became a long-running project that culminated with the Z-titled album Ziezo.

Another Kind of Blues was recorded at Kingsway Recorders in London during May and June 1979. The album captured the line-up of Charlie Harper, guitarist Nicky Garratt, bassist Paul Slack and drummer Pete Davies, with producer John McCoy helping shape their raw punk sound.
--
The original British pressing of Another Kind of Blues appeared on GEM Records on 14 September 1979. The first 20,000 copies were pressed on blue vinyl, making the original edition distinctive among later black-vinyl copies and reissues.
--
Another Kind of Blues included “I Couldn't Be You”, a song originally written by John B. Presley. Charlie Harper arranged it for the U.K. Subs, placing a cover version among the band's own short, sharp originals.
--
Unlike many tracks on the debut album, “I Live in a Car” credited four writers: Charlie Harper, Nicky Garratt, Paul Slack and Rory Lyons. Lyons, also known as Rory Lions, was connected with the band's earlier circle and later became associated with King Kurt.
--
Another Kind of Blues reached number 21 on the UK albums chart in 1979. Its success came from relentless gigging and a growing audience for the band's direct, energetic sound rather than from a major hit single reaching the top of the charts.
--
“Tomorrow's Girls”, released in 1979, reached number 26 on the UK singles chart. Its lyrics imagined a future dominated by women, giving the song a slightly different angle from the band's more familiar street-level punk subjects.
--
Released in 1979, “Stranglehold” reached number 28 in the UK singles chart. Its success helped establish the U.K. Subs as more than a live punk attraction and paved the way for the stronger chart performance of their next studio album, Brand New Age.

--
“B.1.C.” first appeared as one of the two tracks on the B-side of the U.K. Subs’ debut single, “C.I.D.” It was then re-recorded for Another Kind of Blues, making the album version a second recording of a song already circulating on their early single.
--
Released in 1980, “Warhead” drew on the fear of international conflict and the possibility of nuclear destruction. Its ominous subject matter helped distinguish it from punk songs concerned primarily with everyday frustration, while its concise, forceful delivery made it one of the band’s best-known singles.
--
For their second album, Brand New Age, Charlie Harper and guitarist Nicky Garratt shared the production credit. Recorded at Underhill Studio in New Cross in January 1980, it showed the group taking greater control of their recorded sound after their debut album had established them commercially.
--
Brand New Age ends with “Emotional Blackmail II”, following the earlier “Emotional Blackmail” on the same album. Rather than simply repeating the song, the second version gives the record an unusual bookended structure, with a return to a title already heard earlier in the running order.
--
Crash Course, released in 1980, reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart. Recorded live, it became the band's highest-charting album, outperforming both Another Kind of Blues and Brand New Age. The result captured how central their energetic live performances were to their appeal.
--
The U.K. Subs set themselves the unusual goal of releasing studio albums whose titles progressed through the alphabet, beginning with Another Kind of Blues. They eventually completed the sequence with Ziezo in 2016. The project spanned roughly 37 years and involved numerous changes in the band's instrumental line-up, while Charlie Harper remained its constant frontman.

--
The U.K. Subs took on “She's Not There”, the 1964 hit by the Zombies, for a single released in 1979. It reached number 36 on the UK singles chart. The choice connected the band's punk attack with the British beat music of the previous decade.
--
The U.K. Subs recorded “Kicks”, a song written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and made famous by Paul Revere & the Raiders in 1966. Their version appeared on Another Kind of Blues and later on the live album Crash Course, showing how the band reworked older pop material at punk speed.
--
The studio version of “Warhead” runs for only a little over three minutes. Released in 1980, it reached number 30 in the UK singles chart and became one of the band's signature songs. Its subject was the threat of nuclear conflict, a fear that loomed large during the Cold War.
--
Released in 1981, Diminished Responsibility was the U.K. Subs' fourth studio album and reached number 18 in the UK album chart. It followed the success of Crash Course, their live album that had climbed to number eight. The studio record therefore arrived after the group had already demonstrated how well its music translated to the stage.
--
The U.K. Subs' A–Z album project was completed in 2016 with Ziezo. The band's official catalogue describes the wider project as involving 16 guitarists, 20 bass players and 22 drummers over its 37-year span, while Charlie Harper remained the constant vocalist. Few punk groups have turned their changing line-ups into such a literal long-term concept.
--
The album Brand New Age closes with “Emotional Blackmail II”, a return to the earlier song that lasts just over a minute. Rather than ending with another full-length track, the record finishes with this brief reprise, an unusual structural touch on an album built around fast, compact punk songs.
--
Crash Course was not simply a document of the band's latest album. Its 1980 track list brought together songs including “C.I.D.”, “I Live in a Car”, “Tomorrow's Girls”, “Warhead” and “Brand New Age”, capturing material from several stages of their rapid rise. The album's number-eight chart peak remains their highest position on the UK albums chart.

The U.K. Subs recorded “Totters” for their second John Peel session. The track was distinctive because it did not appear on their original studio albums, making the session recording a valuable piece of the band's early history. It was later included on the collected Peel Sessions release.
--
The recordings collected on Peel Sessions came from three separate BBC sessions: 23 May 1978, 6 September 1978 and 16 June 1979. Rather than documenting one moment in time, the collection follows the band across more than a year of rapid development.
--
The songwriting credit for “Disease”, recorded during the band's early period, belongs to Charlie Harper and guitarist Nicky Garratt. Their partnership helped shape the U.K. Subs' catalogue, with Garratt contributing to a number of songs alongside the band's distinctive frontman.
--
The title “Totters” refers to the traditional London trade in collecting and reselling scrap and unwanted goods. Its appearance in the band's BBC session repertoire offered a glimpse of the everyday street culture that existed alongside punk's more familiar themes of alienation and rebellion.
--
Pete Davies, the band's original drummer, retained a substantial personal archive of U.K. Subs material. Among its contents were homemade tapes containing previously unreleased rehearsals from 1980, alongside studio material and BBC session recordings. Such collections help document how the band sounded away from its officially released records.
--
The U.K. Subs' first four albums all entered the UK albums chart. Another Kind of Blues reached number 21, Brand New Age number 18, Crash Course number eight and Diminished Responsibility number 18. The run showed how successfully the group carried its punk audience from studio recordings to a live album and back again.
--
When the complete A–Z collection was assembled, it contained 26 albums and 542 tracks recorded and released across the band's 37-year project. Beginning with Another Kind of Blues and ending with Ziezo, the sequence turned an unusual naming idea into a substantial musical archive.

--
Released in 1980, “Teenage” reached number 32 on the UK singles chart. It followed the success of “Warhead” and demonstrated that the U.K. Subs could maintain a run of charting singles while continuing to release fast, uncompromising punk.
--
“Party in Paris” reached number 37 in the UK singles chart in 1980. The song's title offered a change of setting from the band's more familiar British street imagery, and its chart appearance extended their run of successful singles into the second half of that year.
--
“Keep on Running (Till You Burn)” reached number 41 in April 1981, just outside the UK Top 40. It marked the end of the band's remarkable sequence of charting singles that had begun with “Stranglehold” in 1979.
--
A live recording titled Dance & Travel in the Robot Age documents the U.K. Subs performing in Milan in 1980. It circulated as a live release rather than becoming one of their familiar early studio albums, preserving a snapshot of the band playing outside Britain during their busy touring period.
--
A.W.O.L., released in 1987, was a U.S.-only album. Its regional release makes it an interesting part of the group's international discography, since it was not originally issued to the same audience as their British studio albums.
--
The U.K. Subs' later compilation Down on the Farm carried the subtitle “A Collection of the Less Obvious”. Rather than simply serving as another greatest-hits package, it pointed listeners toward material beyond the best-known singles and albums, reflecting the depth of a catalogue that had grown over many years.
--
The 26-album A–Z box set gathered 542 tracks and included non-album singles, B-sides and rare compilation recordings alongside the studio albums. That made it more than a simple collection of the alphabetically titled records: it also preserved material that could otherwise be scattered across hard-to-find releases.

Before forming the U.K. Subs, Charlie Harper sang with the Marauders, an R&B group. His route into punk was therefore different from that of many younger musicians who emerged directly from the mid-1970s punk scene. Harper brought years of experience as a performer into the band he founded in 1976.
--
The U.K. Subs undertook their first North American tour in 1980. Although their early albums had made an impact in Britain, their American releases followed a different path, with some of their best-known records reaching the US market much later.
--
Lars Frederiksen, who later became widely known as a guitarist and vocalist with Rancid, passed through the U.K. Subs' line-up in the early 1990s. His brief involvement is an unusual link between the original British punk generation and the American punk revival that followed.
--
Over roughly four decades, more than 75 musicians passed through the U.K. Subs' line-ups. Charlie Harper remained the central figure throughout, while the changes in guitarists, bassists and drummers became one of the defining features of the group's long career.
--
The U.K. Subs' Live Kicks drew on a performance recorded at London's Roxy club in 1977. The Roxy was one of the key venues in the first wave of British punk, and the recording preserves the Subs at a time when they were still building their reputation on the capital's club circuit.
--
A.W.O.L., issued in 1987, was a US-only release. It sits apart from the band's better-known British albums and is a reminder that their discography developed differently across territories, with some releases aimed at particular markets rather than receiving a simultaneous international launch.
--
The U.K. Subs' official A–Z collection includes 542 tracks across 26 albums, including non-album singles, B-sides and rare compilation recordings. The scale of the collection reflects a band whose history was documented not only through studio albums but also through a large number of singles and scattered releases.

“C.I.D.” was one of the U.K. Subs’ earliest important singles, released in 1978. It became a number-one hit on the independent chart, helping establish the band before their run of appearances on the national singles chart in 1979 and 1980.
--
The 1981 single “Countdown” reached number eight on the UK independent chart. It arrived after the band's most commercially successful period on the national chart, showing that they retained a strong following among independent record buyers.
--
“Ice Age” appeared on the B-side of “Keep on Running (Till You Burn)” in 1981. Like many U.K. Subs B-sides, it became part of the wider catalogue later gathered on compilations, making the singles useful sources for material beyond the studio albums.
--
The “Keep on Running (Till You Burn)” single included “Perfect Girl” alongside “Ice Age”. These additional tracks illustrate how the band used singles to release songs that did not necessarily appear on their main studio albums at the time.
--
The U.K. Subs recorded a French-language version of “Party in Paris”, which appeared as a B-side to “Keep on Running (Till You Burn)”. It is an unusual variation on one of their best-known singles and a reminder of the band's attention to audiences beyond Britain.
--
The U.K. Subs released The Last Will and Testament of in 2024. Its title has a deliberately final-sounding quality, but it belongs to a catalogue that has continued to grow long after the band's first-wave punk years. The album was also listed in the Official Charts Company's sales charts.
--
Demon Music Group assembled the U.K. Subs' 1978–1981 singles in a ten-single vinyl box, with each seven-inch record pressed on a different colour of vinyl. The collection brings together 31 A- and B-sides and reproduces the original sleeve artwork, preserving the visual identity of the band's early releases.

The earliest known U.K. Subs studio recordings date from the summer of 1977, featuring Charlie Harper on vocals and harmonica, Richard Anderson on guitar, Steve Slack on bass and Rob Harper on drums. These recordings remained unheard officially for decades before being restored and released on a limited seven-inch single in 2016.
--
Guitarist Nicky Garratt was impressed by the band's summer 1977 demo before joining in October that year. The recordings therefore preserve an earlier version of the U.K. Subs, before Garratt became one of the key musicians associated with their classic early period.
--
Richard Anderson played guitar in the early U.K. Subs line-up, before Nicky Garratt took over. Anderson's place in the band's history is particularly easy to overlook because Garratt became so closely associated with the group's best-known early records.
--
The two-track Summer 1977 Demo seven-inch was released in 2016 on dual blue-coloured vinyl, limited to 500 individually numbered copies. The release was mastered and restored from an old cassette, making it an unusual example of punk history recovered from a fragile, non-studio master source.
--
Harper's contribution to the original 1977 line-up was not limited to singing: the band's archive also credits him with harmonica. That detail connects the U.K. Subs' beginnings with Harper's earlier R&B background, before the group settled into the hard-edged punk sound for which it became known.
--
The U.K. Subs' Time and Matter archive was created to document the group's activities day by day, month by month and year by year. Its gigography and release records preserve details that are often missing from conventional discographies, including early line-up changes, live dates and previously unheard recordings.
--
The Complete Punk Singles Collection was released as a 29-track double CD covering every single A-side issued by the band. It also came with a 20-page booklet containing notes on the tracks, offering a focused alternative to the much larger A–Z box set.
